…kheystar az darya wa nafas… (…خیس تر از دریا و نفس…)
for alto flute, harp, and percussion
Developed under the aegis of the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music in 2022. The piece was workshopped and performed by Nathalie Joachim, Haruka Fujii, & Charles Overton in Boonville, CA in June 2022.
The title, which translates to “wetter than the river and the breath,” is taken from the tenth poem in French-Iranian poet Mehdi Farajpour’s collection, Wa.
The piece is an exploration of musical flow, both between musicians and between sound as a physical phenomenon. The piece creates a symmetry between the instruments, where wood is melodic and sustaining, the flute is percussive, and the harp flows like breath across the musical line.
